Vezzi goes distance in Virtual Comrades
More than 30 athletes competed in the event.
More than 30 athletes, most from Scottburgh Athletics Club, plus a few runners from other clubs, took part in a Virtual Comrades run last Sunday.
Two runners attempted the 90km distance, starting in Ixopo at 04:00.
Unfortunately Mez Kennedy from Scottburgh AC had stomach problems and pulled out at 51km, but was on a good time up until that point.
Vezokuhle ‘Vezzi’ Hlatshwayo from Umkomaas AC went the distance, clocking up a fantastic time of 7:58.
The 45km and 21km runners started on the Scottburgh side of Jolivet at 06:00 and all finished.
Ewoud Grobler from Toti Athletic Club ran his 45km race in 2:50.
At the start there was a loud speaker playing Chariots of Fire as well as the national anthem, followed by the cock crow as per Comrades tradition.
“There was amazing support on the road from fellow club members, friends and family, with tables supplying food, drinks and plenty cheer every 3km,” said Dana Daniels of Scottburgh AC.
The runners finished at Scottburgh Golf Club, home to Scottburgh AC where an excited and supportive welcome awaited.
Regular time trials take place at Scottburgh GC on Wednesdays at 17:15.
