N2 at Umgababa still closed, rain causes more damage to R102 detour from Umkomaas to Ilfracombe

This section of the R102 is the alternate route taken by motorists who are unable to use section 24 of the National Route 2 (N2) northbound carriageway between Umzinto and Umgababa which is still closed.

The R102 from Umkomaas to Ilfracombe has sustained further damage as the wet weather continues.

One lane is still open, however reports indicate that it is narrow and motorists should drive with caution – as they have been doing so on this stretch of road since the April flooding.

This section of the R102 is the alternate route taken by motorists who are unable to use section 24 of the National Route 2 (N2) northbound carriageway between Umzinto and Umgababa which closed due to the April flooding.

Last month, parts of the N2 cracked and collapsed, and according to the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL), a temporary lane was scheduled to open a week ago, but the reopening has been delayed.

As at Sunday morning (May 22) 12:00, this section of the N2 was still closed as confirmed by local security companies patrolling the area.

SANRAL has been contacted to find out when the N2’s temporary lane will reopen and an update will be provided accordingly.

In the meantime, motorists using the R102 detour are advised to watch out for new potholes forming in the road, standing water and mud.
