The community undergoes an incredible test in terms of travelling on roads that are unacceptable, and then more rain in such a short time.

Some 100mm of rain was reported in Barracouta Bend, 157mm in Dirk Uys Street, 175mm in David Avenue, 176mm in Gumtree/Coral Roads and 185mm in Adrienne Road.

The Sanctuary of the Great White Light, 9 Barrow Street, Umkomaas hosts its Clairvoyant Day this Saturday (28th) from 09:00 – 14:30. For more information and bookings call 083 6545261.

A meeting was held at Relton Hall regarding the shooting of vervet monkeys, last Saturday.

Steve Smit from National Monkey Help Line attended with Tracey Rowles from Umsizi.

Pennington Community Watch (PCW) was represented by Silvano Borea.

PCW requests residents to report the shooting of monkeys to the Saps and to submit an affidavit to initiate a formal investigation.

Steve Smit explained that vervet monkeys are indigenous and territorial animals. They move in troops of up to 30 and feed on whatever is available in their natural habitat; they don’t require feeding. A major hazard to them is human infrastructure, electric and razor wire and dogs. These are the causes of most deaths.

Vervet monkeys are listed as a protected species in CITES’s Appendix II, and prohibits the hunting, trapping, harming or killing of vervet monkeys without a permit.

If wild animals, including monkeys cause damage, it should be reported to the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries.

The discharging of firearms, including air guns (pellet guns and paintball guns) are prohibited in a residential area by section 120 of the Firearms Control Act, Act 60 of 2000.

It was suggested by the community that Pennington be declared a pellet gun free zone and Captain Devan Gramany of Scottburgh Saps advised he would assist in the reporting of monkey shootings.

The golf day fundraiser for Shaninlea Visser was a success. Winners were Jonathan and Reg Pillay.

Sponsors and participants are thanked for the support.

Congratulations to Apryl Jade Edwards on graduating as a candidate attorney with an LLB law degree.
