Thirteen yachts entered the famous race, but only five managed to finish.

Dylan McGovern (24) of Port Shepstone sailed on the yacht, Regardless 2, the line honours winner in the Minuteman Press Vasco da Gama Ocean Race 2022.

The yacht which left Durban last Sunday at 14:00 arrived at the finish line in East London on Tuesday this week at 05:00 – clocking a time of 39 hours sailing on the ocean.

Dylan sailed together with Neville Bransby (owner and skipper) and crew members Sean Jones (skipper and navigator), Anthony Engelbrecht, Jean-Louis Swart, Struan Campbell, Michael Milne, Jethro Milne, Anthony Howes and Vincent Vermaak.

Dylan described the first 24 hours as quite tough as they sailed into a massive south westerly, but by Monday afternoon it had changed and became more favourable to finish the race on the downwind.

“This certainly separated the men from the boys,” he added, laughing.

Dylan, who has been sailing professionally since 2015, said the Vasco is a really special event, and has been continuing since the 1970s.

The young skipper said he felt blessed to be part of such an amazing experience, and certainly one that would add weight to his career.

“The race is well respected and well-known around the world, and very special for many sailors in South Africa,” he added.
