New stalls for traders in Scottburgh and Umzinto nears completion
An impromptu site visit was recently done by mayor Sibongile Khathi to assess the progress of this project.
Earlier this year, informal traders were informed that Umdoni Municipality in collaboration with the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, will construct 65 Scottburgh market stalls for craft and other traders, and upgrade 18 units at the Umzinto bus rank for traditional healers.
An impromptu site visit was recently done by mayor Sibongile Khathi to assess the progress of this project.
It appears that the Umzinto stalls are at 95% completion after renovations of the ablution blocks, the security guard house, the roof and the installation of new doors for all trading units.
The Scottburgh stalls at the Scott Street Craft Market area and Scottburgh main beach are also at an advanced stage of construction and the municipality reassured traders that the stalls will be completed by the end of May as planned.
Traders in Scottburgh in particular have been operating in open spaces over the years with no proper shelter and are excited for the end result of the project.
“It is imperative that informal traders are taken care of to ensure a sturdier contest against the scourge of poverty and unemployment in our communities,” said mayor Khathi.
