Report theft of essential infrastructure

The police will not hesitate to arrest or prosecute anyone in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act.

Local authorities are working together to bring community safety back on the South Coast.

The common public view that community safety is the sole responsibility of the police has changed and people now recognise that government, communities and partnerships at all levels must be actively engaged for a safer environment for all.

Vandalism or damage to roads, theft of cables and copper taps or tampering with electricity and water supply is a criminal offence. The South Coast has seen a surge in property damage, theft of cables and daily crime.

The distribution and use of drugs increase crime in all parts of the South Coast. The lack of lawlessness is a worry and the powers that be are ready to take control of the South Coast and make it safe for all who live here and visit.

Now the police will not hesitate to arrest or prosecute anyone in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015, if they deliberately damage or steal infrastructure.

People have been successfully prosecuted for theft of cellphone tower batteries and cables in the past.

Police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge said second hand dealers and or scrap metal dealers are cautioned against purchasing questionable copper piping or wire thereby ending the market and trade of these goods.

“The public is encouraged to report all acts of theft of essential infrastructure to the authorities and not to engage in such acts of criminality,” warned Mpinge.

Well, there you have it, the police have encouraged its people to report all acts of crime. Heed the call and report all crime from cable theft, drug abuse, damage to infrastructure, property, theft, robbery or illegal dumping to the police or law enforcement. The time is now, act now.
