Paws with Famous Owners: Remembering Susan, the Queen’s favourite

After Elizabeth's marriage to Prince Philip in 1947, Susan was hidden beneath blankets in the royal carriage and smuggled aboard the royal yacht Britannia to accompany the pair on their honeymoon.

Susan was a Pembroke corgi dog owned by Queen Elizabeth II, given to Elizabeth on her 18th birthday in 1944 by her father King George.

Susan was the first in a long line of corgis and dorgis – a cross between a corgi and a dachshund – owned by the Queen.

After Elizabeth’s marriage to Prince Philip in 1947, Susan was hidden beneath blankets in the royal carriage and smuggled aboard the royal yacht Britannia to accompany the pair on their honeymoon.

In 1959, Susan caused quite a stir when she bit a policeman on patrol at the palace.

The Queen has owned more than 30 corgis.

In 2007, the Queen had five corgis – Monty, Emma, Linnet, Willow and Holy.

She also owned five cocker spaniels, named Bisto, Oxo, Flash, Spick and Span, as well as four dorgis, named Cider, Berry, Vulcan and Candy.

Monty, Willow and Honey appeared in the stunning advert for the 2021 Olympic Games, where actor Daniel Craig accompanies the Queen with the three corgis to supposedly jump out of a helicopter and into the jam-packed stadium.

After Susan’s death in 1959, the Queen personally designed a head stone for her grave at Sandringham House.
