Water leaks cause for concern

It seems like the water problems will never come to an end in the Ugu District – from the ageing infrastructure to leaking pipes, and fresh clean water being wasted daily.

Jill Klusener, a manager at a local nursery in Uvongo said water has been leaking from an Ugu pipe to the nursery.

She said this has caused problems as the driveway and the entrance to the business have been damaged.

“The fence is also being damaged because water runs through it into the nursery,” added Jill.

This clean water runs as far as inside the old bird park.

Spokesperson for Ugu District Municipality France Zama said about four leaks has been fixed on that particular line previously.

“We have also been in constant communication with the area councillor, our teams have been sent to verify if there is another leak on the same line.”

Another business owner in Shelly Beach complained about a leaking water meter.

Chantal Owen and her husband Llewellyn said the meter burst a few weeks ago, they phoned Ugu, they came to fix it but dug up the spot and cracked a wall.

It is a safety harzard as an Eskom electricity box is next to the water meter.

She said they have phoned Eskom to fix this, instead they took out the cable and ran it across the road and cars are driving over it.

The Owens’ concern is that the water meter and electricity cable are next to each other.

“This is very dangerous, children walk up and down here?”

Another complaint came from Magcinokacwadi Shazi from Merlewood.

She said an Ugu pipeline in her yard bursts regularly. She has been reporting it to Ugu since last year.

“I can’t phone so I normally catch a taxi and go to the municipal offices to report it. They have fixed it twice already but I can see it will burst again soon.”

She said the problem now is that the exposed pipe can no longer be stabilised on the metal support that was built for it, and will soon fall off and burst.
