Career move for Sheppie’s Vernon Govender

The South Coast musician started a new career at Edison Corporation in Umhlanga Rocks.

South Coast musician, Vernon Govender is no stranger to the community and his hard work promoting culture, and helping with charity has always paid off.

For many years he has been promoting and uplifting the Hindu culture, music and his passion to share his talent has yielded positive results as he shares his wisdom with the youth.

Earlier last month he started a new career as the chief of staff at Edison Corporation in Somerset Park, Umhlanga Rocks. He has also been appointed as the office manager. Vernon worked for 16 years at the Department of Health based at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital in human resources training and development.

His boss now is Vivian Reddy founder of the Edison Group. Mr Reddy was also one of the recipients of the Men of Valour award last year together with Vernon and this is where Mr Reddy picked up on Vernon’s profile.

Vernon is passionate about his cultural services to the community and music classes Prema Joythi Seva Sungam and the Sa Re Ga Ma Music School which he started over 10 years ago. “I will still host music classes once a month when visiting Port Shepstone. I will never leave my music students as they laid the foundation and platform for my first music school. They form part of my success story.”

Vernon’s service to the community will continue when he is in Port Shepstone. He has already joined the Umhlanga Hindu Society and has services on different days and include services (songs) in Tamil, Telegu, Hindi and Sai and divine Life songs.

“Doing services and Seva work has been a huge blessing to me. I have always been successful in all my endeavours. God has favoured me and always blessed me. “

He added that he will miss the community of Port Shepstone, more especially his parents and friends.

Vernon was nominated for the South African Traditional Music Achievers (SATMA) award. The event acknowledges and celebrates artists in the traditional music section in South Africa. He was one of 10 award recipients, who were acknowledge as ongoing trailblazers, active leaders and key community players in their respective fields. From a young age Vernon realised he had a talent for music.

He has also won other prestigious awards from the MEC for Health for service excellence, won the Legends award with BigM productions, won the Men of Valour awards, the Mayoral community awards for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and many others.

Vernon looks forward to this promotional post and claims that change is sometimes good.

“You have to believe in yourself remember growth and development never stops. Believe in your dreams, put God first and you will never be last.”
