Umbango residents fed up with sewage stench

Sewage spills are an ongoing problem in Umbango and it seems to be a never-ending for many residents. The stench on Monday this week on Crescent Street was unbearable and residents said that Ugu District Municipality turns a blind eye to their calls for help.

“Urgent intervention is needed from Ugu to sort out this environmental disaster. We can’t be living in an area were we breathe sewage almost every day. The residents living on either side of the river have complained several times, but no remedial action has been taken. We have appealed to Ugu, ward councillor and to department officials to rectify this environmental issue and to date we have received no help to this ongoing problem,” said one resident.

Ward councillor, Ajith Rajaram said he has addressed the issue of sewage flowing along Crescent Street to officials at Ugu on many occasions.

“This week it was unbearable and I understand what residents are going through. But it’s up to the municipality and environmental health departments to fix this problem.”

Resident, Venny Naicker said it is completely untenable as residents have been paying their water and sewage rates to Ugu which was supposed to ensure the safety of all.

“The situation is intolerable in terms of the health danger posed by this toxic situation and the pollution to the Umbango River. I am appealing to the powers that be to help us return the river to its once healthy state. I am confident many fellow residents feel the same way. “

Ugu District Municipality was contacted for comment and none was received before going to print.
