Masks: Nothing to ‘crow’ about

Often one hears about the affect discarded face masks have on wildlife but seldom witness the damage first-hand.
Last Thursday morning, hours after health minister Joe Phaahla repealed several Covid-19 regulations relating to the wearing of face masks, Herald staff spotted an injured pied crow hopping outside its offices in the parking area.
The biggest surprise and shock for staff was that a mask was entangled around the bird’s wing.

This ‘urban local’ which can be a nuisance at times in CBDs, is a pretty amazing bird when handled up close. It’s large wing span, bold black and white markings and alert personality is rather captivating.
It was however agreed, that it would be kinder to euthanise the poor bird, as it appeared that the mask had broken its wing.
Although there is much debate about the pied crow and its expansion into urban areas, one could not help but feel awfully sorry for the creature suffering due to mankind’s tardiness and total disregard for the environment. Please think before you dispose of your mask!
If there was ever a sign that masks have run its course – this was it!
