KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala along with the MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Jomo Sibiya restored dignity to 63 people from Masinenge Informal Settlement, after double storey housing units were handed to them last Thursday.
The Masinenge slums clearance project is ongoing and more people are expected to benefit from it.
The handover occurred two weeks after 59 Masinenge informal housing units burnt down, and left the owners destitute.
Fortunately no-one was injured in the blaze.
This programme is anticipated to benefit 882 families on completion in 2024 at a cost of R102.3-m.
Abigail Ntombizanele Gumede and Shoki Reginah Nhlumayo were the first two beneficiaries and could not hide their excitement when the Premier and MEC handed the keys to their new houses.
Sibiya said they will return to hand out material to the victims of the fire to rebuild.
He also said that they want to complete the Masinenge slums project, and urged people to stop renting out RDP houses as some rent them out and move back to the slums.
