Nonagenarian receives medal for raising R90 000
Bill Wedderburn raised funds for healthcare workers families affected by Covid-19.
After making headlines earlier this year for completing a 900km walk before turning 90-years-old as part of a fundraising initiative for the families of healthcare workers, Bill Wedderburn was awarded a medal of appreciation for his brilliant efforts.
The Renishaw Hills resident was admitted to Netcare Kingsway Hospital in Amanzimtoti when he contracted Covid-19 and pneumonia back in January 2021 during the second wave of the pandemic.
He suffers from chronic kidney disease and was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer at the time, yet made a full recovery.
To thank the hospital for saving him and after hearing about a young nurse that died due to Covid-19, he set out on a mission to raise funds to help the families of healthcare workers.
Wedderburn, who turned 90 last month, raised just over R90 000 in donations for these families.
The general manager at Netcare Kingsway Hospital, Annatjie Demetriou, stated that the hospital team was at a loss for words by Wedderburn’s commitment to making a difference to the families’ lives.
The 90-year-old was presented a medal of appreciation inscribed with the words ‘900km for Nurses’.
“Bill Wedderburn is truly a remarkable human being and we felt that he deserved nothing short of a medal for what he has achieved,” said Demetriou.
“We hope that this token of our gratitude expresses how meaningful his commendable initiative has been for us all here at the hospital.”
“Every day we think of the healthcare workers who lost their lives to Covid-19, and it is truly heart-warming to know just what a difference this kind gentleman is making for their families. He is an inspiration to us all.”
