Life sentence for former cop Gary Govender

He pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder.

Former policeman Gary Govender was recently handed life imprisonment for killing his wife, Mantombi Pearl Govender, in November 2018.

He was found guilty of the murder, as well as for housebreaking with intent to steal, and theft.

Govender was sentenced in Durban High Court.

The case was heard in the Scottburgh High Court, where he was found guilty – and subsequently moved to the high court for sentencing.

The couple had been outside Leisuredene Village in Hibberdene when he fatally shot her in the head.

Mantombi Pearl Govender was shot dead in 2018.

Govender initially reported the incident, claiming his wife had been shot by two unknown men.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder.
