Umdoni and Ugu partner for Mandela Day
Clean-up and awareness campaigns, agriculture and education cultivation activities were on the agenda.
Local government, traditional leadership and government departments united for Mandela Day on the South Coast this year.
The leadership, comprising of Ugu District mayor Skhumbuzo ‘Zero’ Mqadi, Umdoni mayor Sibongile Khathi, Ray Nkonyeni speaker Zodwa Mzindle and other councillors were part of a 67 minute clean-up at Amandawe taxi rank.
The aim was to engage in clean-up and awareness campaigns, agriculture and education cultivation activities.
Further south, in the KwaNzimakwe area under Ray Nkonyeni, leadership conducted a One Home, One Garden campaign where communities were educated about the importance of having vegetable gardens to fight poverty.
Thereafter, the leadership handed over books and shelves and painted the work and play area at the Education First Literacy Centre.
Both Ugu District and Umdoni mayors have encouraged communities to remember the significance of the inception of Mandela Day, which is to give back to the less fortunate and build strong and caring communities.
