Personal experience inspires author to write book
The inspiration to write Dress Code came from personal experience
How one dresses says a lot about their status, age and profession – this is exactly what award-winning Gamalakhe author, Irene Nteyi Myingwa speaks about in her new book, ‘Dress Code’ which was launched in Grahamstown recently.
She said the inspiration to write this particular book came from personal experience.
“I visited a government institution to apply for something, I was dressed in casual wear and I did not receive a warm welcome or any attention. I spent the whole day in this institution but on my next visit I wore expensive attire. Guess what happened, every employee offered their help. This change of attitude made me realise that one’s attire speaks volumes.”

Myingwa said the target market for Dress Code is almost anyone and everyone, especially girls and women.
“The book highlights different dress codes such as police, nurses, doctors, lifeguards, pilots, etc. These groups are identified by the uniform they wear.”
As August is Women’s Month, Myingwa said her message to all artists, especially women writers is that art is a God-given gift. “The journey to climb up the ladder is tough but with perseverance, networking and hard work, one can put food on the table through art. As they say, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’.”
Myingwa has written 23 books so far, covering various genres and languages among them, IsiZulu, isiXhosa and English.
