Supermarket employee forced to skin dog
The Lower South Coast SPCA visited the supermarket but found it closed.
The owner of a supermarket in Harding, believed to be a Chinese national, allegedly forced an employee to skin a dead dog, so that he could eat it.
A video was circulated on social media, showing a man skinning a dog and saying that his employer will cook and eat it.
According to a source, who is known to the Herald, the man was forced to do so in fear of losing his job.
Also, he did not believe that the employer would eat the dog.
The Lower South Coast SPCA visited the supermarket last Friday, but found it closed.
SPCA manager Mike Davis said it was investigating.
Spokesperson for Umuziwabantu Municipality, Bruce Jalubane said the Local Economic Development office did receive a report that the supermarket had health hazard issues.
“Our officer went to investigate, unfortunately the shop was closed.”
Jalubane said he has escalated the matter to the Ugu District environmental office for investigation.
“After the district office has concluded their investigations, they will report back to us, and then certain measures will be taken.”
It is also believed that the employer of the supermarket was underpaying his staff and was ordered by the Department of Labour to backpay them.
The Herald has documents (compliance order) showing the amount owed by the employer, but according to the source, the employees have not been paid.
The labour department was contacted for comment, but none was received at the time of going to print.
Attempts to contact the owner have been unsuccessful.
