ANC wins ward 23 by-election

The ANC retained Ward 23 under Ray Nkonyeni Municipality during a recent by-election. The party was represented by Bheki Wiseman Gcino Cele who is now the newly-elected councillor of Ward 23.

The by-election came after the death of former Ward 23 councillor Mfanufikile Mngqosini.The ANC received 2 093 votes, while the IFP bagged 49 votes and the EFF scored 150. In his maiden speech as Ward 23 councillor, Cele thanked the ANC volunteers who worked hard to get the results and the public for trusting the ANC to be the party to deliver services to them.

Also, ANC Tolomane Mnyayiza Regional member Ayanda Gumede who was in charge of Ward 23 after Mngqosini’s death, said the results show the strength of the ANC in Bhobhoyi.“The unity of the ANC brings good results. We thank the leadership of the ANC constituency in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, the ANC regional leadership and all the leaders of the ANC for working together in this by-election,” said Gumede, adding that he will continue working as the ward councillor because Cele will only be sworn in next year.

Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) Ugu regional manager Zolile KaSiphiwo KaSiphiwo confirmed the victory of the ANC.
“There were only a few parties that ran for the election. The ANC got 2 093 votes, the EFF got 150, the IFP got 49, the AFR got 12. The ANC won 90.84% of the votes,” said KaSiphiwo.

Meanwhile, ANC KZN secretary Bheki Mtolo said they note that the back-to-back victories in by-elections are testimony to the level of unity and cohesion within the ANC and its alliance partners.

“This unity has made it possible for the local election teams and ANC volunteers to bridge the gap between the organisation and local communities. As we move forward, ANC councillors and all elected public representatives undertake to serve our communities with a high level of humility, efficiency and speed,” said Mtolo.
