Prison workers picket
The provincial chairperson of the union, Thokozani Mlambo, said they had recently gathered because of the pressures faced by the employees at work at this particular centre.
Port Shepstone Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) members picketed outside the Port Shepstone Correctional Centre recently.
The provincial chairperson of the union, Thokozani Mlambo, said they had gathered because of the pressures faced by the employees at work at this particular centre.
“What bothers us is that this has been happening for at least three years, and we have been asking the Department of Correctional Services to intervene.”
He added that they have also reported the matter to the department’s provincial commissioner and had discussions with him.
According to Mlambo, for some time, they have been promised that things will change for the better, but till now, nothing has been done.
“As the provincial executive committee, we took a decision to take this step (picket) because the discussions have not helped. We felt we needed to show our discontent on behalf of the workers and also had the workers join us.”
Mlambo added that looking after prisoners and helping them rehabilitate is not an easy job.
The spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, Singabakho Nxumalo, said the matter is being attended to.
He said that it is about labour-related issues, and officials will be addressed.
