Lead role for Nomalanga Shozi
The actress portrays the character of Amandla Zungu in the emotionally charged and high-stakes drama series.
Marburg Secondary alumnus, Nomalanga Shozi, recently bagged her first-ever lead role on BET Africa’s drama series Black Gold.
The series premiered on August 18 and airs Monday to Thursday at 18:30 on DStv channel 129.
Shozi portrays the character of Amandla Zungu in the emotionally charged and high-stakes drama series.
Describing Shozi’s role, Mandla Ngcongwane, executive director at Black Brain Pictures, said Amandla is a principled daughter of the soil who is cast out of her ancestral home after being falsely accused of her father’s murder.
He described the series as a powerful story of betrayal, legacy and redemption; infused with black joy, black love and black pride.
Shozi stars alongside seasoned actors Dawn Thandeka King and Sello Maake KaNcube.
Excited about her new gig, Shozi thanked God for the opportunity.
“When the time is right, He, the Lord will make it happen. Wow man, thank you Jesus. That is really all I can say. I did not know then but I do now. He has no rival, no equal, only God is king. Thank you Team Black Brain,” she said.
She added: “It has been a dream working with the cast and crew. To my family, I hope you love it and understand the long days and even longer nights. To my closest friends, thank you for supporting me through a year that has truly tested me. And to our viewers, I hope you enjoy it because we really pour our hearts into it.”
Speaking on her first week on the job, Shozi said it has been a rollercoaster.
She said a lot can change in just one week. “Amandla’s world just got turned upside down. But what is next, the journey has just begun, tune in on Monday for more Black Gold,” she said.
Meanwhile, Ngcongwane said creating Black Gold was a game-changing experience.
He explained that it shook them as much as it would shake the audience.
“Partnering with BET on this co-production is more than just making a show, it’s about reinvesting in our industry, breaking barriers, and taking a bold step forward for local storytelling and long-term growth. Black Gold is raw, emotional and unapologetically authentic storytelling.”
He said on the show, Shozi is forced into the dangerous world of illegal mining, where she must rise through the ranks to reclaim her legacy and confront the woman who stole everything from her.
“Black Gold also champions empowering female narratives, featuring strong women who navigate and challenge the male-dominated worlds of mining and business. The series highlights the resilience, complexity and strength of women in the face of adversity; making it a timely and powerful reflection of modern African womanhood,” he said.
