Port Shepstone mountain biker rider triumphs on North Coast

Tayne Rudling has shown impressive form of late.

Tayne Rudling of Port Shepstone won the inaugural Peschlsports Cane Challenger mountain bike race recently.

Presented by Cycle Lab, the race attracted more than 400 riders, who lined up just after dawn at Cornubia Mall to tackle the rocky, sandy trails that wind through the sugarcane fields of Umhlanga and Umdloti.

The weather was hot and humid, with riders tackling 20, 40 and 60km courses.

Tayne clocked a time of 2:08:15 to win the men’s overall 60km race – and his age group category.

He edged out DriveTrain Academy co-founder and cycling coach Tyronne White by 16 seconds.

Tayne also finished first in his men’s senior 19-29 years category.

Afterwards he said the race was ‘awesome but tough’ and that the event was well organised.

Rouxda Grobler (DriveTrain Academy), who lives in Sheffield on the North Coast, took top honours in the veteran 40-49 category and 60km race overall with a time of 2:32:13.

She agreed with Tayne’s comments in that it was a testing race. “There was a lot of pedalling; it felt like I was constantly pedalling.”
