Gun-wielding cellphone thief sentenced to 15 years’ impisonment

Police traced the man through cellphone records and arrested him.

Bongumusa Nene (25) was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in the Ezinqoleni Regional Court for aggravated robbery, and three years for housebreaking.

An additional 15 years was added for being in possession of a firearm.

The sentences are to run concurrently. Nene was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

On December 31, 2021, a woman was walking home in Qinabout Location when an unknown man held her at gunpoint at about 11:00.

He demanded cash which she did not have, and robbed her of her two cellphones and fled.

A case of aggravated robbery was opened for investigation at Saps Gamalakhe.

Nene was traced through cellphone records and police arrested him.

The firearm used to rob the woman had been stolen after Nene had broken into a residence in Gamalakhe earlier that month.

The investigating officer was Detective Sergeant Grant Phehlukwayo of Gamalakhe Detective Service.
