Premature baby found in Ugu District Municipality’s sewer system

Municipal spokesperson Zimbini Mpurwana described the incident as deeply distressing.

Ugu District Municipality has issued a strong plea to residents to protect sewer infrastructure after a traumatic discovery along St Michael’s last week.

During routine operations, municipal staff found what appeared to be a premature baby trapped in a sewer strainer. Ugu Security Services and Saps were called to the scene, where officers took over for forensic processing.

Municipal spokesperson Zimbini Mpurwana described the incident as deeply distressing, saying it has highlighted serious concerns regarding foreign objects being disposed of in the sewer system.

Foreign objects are causing severe damage to sewer systems.

“Our sewer networks are designed to handle wastewater only. Disposing of foreign item including sanitary products, clothing, solid waste and any biological matter causes severe blockages, damages critical infrastructure, compromises worker safety, and places unnecessary strain on the entire system.”

According to the municipality, the negative consequences of such misuse include extensive damage to pumps and treatment works, overflow risks impacting homes, rivers and the environment, increased maintenance costs and delays in service delivery. Also, municipal staff are exposed to traumatic and hazardous situations.

The municipality urges residents to use sewer lines responsibly.

Mpurwana urged residents to act responsibly and support municipal efforts.

“We are calling on the community to help us protect our sewer infrastructure, report illegal dumping and ensure dignity for all residents.”
