A 58-year-old man was arrested in a Hawks-led operation in Phoenix on September 18 for allegedly dealing in drugs.

The arrest followed an investigation by Hawks members from the Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, working with Durban Metro Police Trio Crimes and the Durban Metro Police Drug Team.

The investigation was launched after the Hawks received intelligence about a possible drug den on School Side Road, where it was believed that schoolchildren were buying drugs.

Following the investigation, the team conducted an operation at the premises.

During the search, officers found crack cocaine, heroin capsules, cocaine blocks and Mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R100 000.

Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane, Hawks spokesperson, said the man was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs.

A licensed 9mm pistol and 10 rounds of live ammunition were also found in his possession.

The firearm will undergo ballistic testing to establish whether it may have been used in the commission of any crimes.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court.
