The magnificent Aliwal Shoal is one of the many marine protected areas (MPA) that will be celebrated on MPA Day on August 1.

Mid-South Coast locals will have an opportunity to commence with celebrations a day in advance at Scottburgh main beach this Sunday (July 31) at 08:00.

Part of Sunday’s festivities include exploring rocky shores. PHOTO SUPPLIED.

The event will kick-off with a paddle out/backline gathering, thereafter from 08:30/09:00 there will be an MPA talk by Dr Judy and Bruce Mann with a question and answer session, followed by beach and rocky shores exploration.

The Aliwal Shoal MPA has been identified as a Hope Spot by Mission Blue, scientific recognition that this space is critical to the health of the ocean. It was also revealed that this is a cleaning station for the highly-endangered shortfin devil rays.
