Maskandi festival attracts large crowd
A wet Ugu Sports and Leisure field did not stop the thousands of patrons from enjoying the festival.
The inaugural Ugu Maskandi Festival held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre was a huge success, having attracted over 4000 people from around the country.

Siyabonga Mkhungo of Ugu Broadcasting Services and festival organiser said the event had made just over 1000 ticket sales last Friday evening, and over 3000 by the next morning.

“At the gate we made over 600 sales from walk-ins and our VIP and VVIP guests which included the media, municipal officials and other dignitaries were also over 1000,”which for us was amazing.”

Mkhungo agreed that there were some glitches which could have been avoided, however it was a learning curve for the organisers.

“Some of the top performers did not make it, however this was as a result of them having more than one booking in other provinces, and they failed to make it to the festival on time. Our humble apologies to the supporters and this will be rectified at our next event in September 2023,”said Mkhungo.

He said the festival boosted the economy of the South Coast as most hotels were fully booked.

“The festival also created job opportunities as the service providers and vendors were all local. We are still going to do a full analysis of the event and we can assure our supporters that the event will be bigger and better next year.

“We thank everyone who attended, without them the event would not have been a success,” Mkhungo concluded.
