Ugu leadership monitors food supply at local schools
Ugu Acting mayor, Mandla Chiya applauded the work done by head of schools in ensuring some pupils were fed despite difficulties that had been encountered.
Acting Ugu District Municipality mayor, Cllr Mandala Chiya together with Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza visited a number of schools in the district, to monitor the progress of the National Schools Nutrition Programme on Tuesday morning this week.
The delegation included the Umzumbe Municipality mayor Bongani Nyuswa, Ugu District Education director Mfundi Sibiya and senior provincial officials visited Duduzile Secondary, Mangquzuka Secondary and Malusi and Mbalenhle Primary schools and more, to monitor the quality of food distributed to be consumed by the learners.
This is after many complaints from the service providers who were not happy with the quality of vegetables supplied to them among other grievances raised.
The delegation also had the opportunity to inspect the school kitchens, stockrooms and taste meals cooked to feed pupils.
MEC Khoza apologised profusely on behalf of the department to all the schools about the hurdles that had been experienced in the past month, while Chiya said it was important for schools to ensure they report service providers who have now taken over the programme, should they fail to uphold their contractual obligations.
