They can also help create a bold statement by transforming a room by making an impact that ties a space together. Area rugs or small carpets provide lots of visual focal points too.
An area rug will decrease the noise in your space. Not only is carpet quieter to walk on than a hard surface floor, but it also absorbs sound from the air. Have you noticed that your room has a slight echo? It’s because the hard surface floor does not absorb sound in the same way that carpet does. Place an area rug, and listen to the difference.
Carpet is a lot softer than hardwood or tile, and more comfortable to stand on than a hard surface floor. Not only does the carpet feel softer to the touch on your skin, but also its softness gives it flexibility, which allows it to absorb some of the impacts of your footsteps which takes some of the pressure off your body.
An area rug can help anchor the furniture in a room, which helps to create a cosy space.  In a living room the rug should be large enough that the main pieces of furniture are all on the rug, or have the front legs on the rug. Without the rug, it can feel as though the furniture is ‘floating’ in the room.
