Cole Conway makes survival instructor history
Cole attributed his successful completion and steadfast endurance, to the overwhelming support from his family and mentor.
South Coaster Cole Conway undertook a gruelling 11 day survival instructors course at the Boswa Survival & Bushcraft Academy, near Gouritzmond in the Western Cape last month (June 9).
During this time, Cole gained knowledge in both survival and bushcraft techniques, including fire lighting methods, water acquisition, camp and shelter building, as well as bush medics and navigation.
At the same time, he was also subjected to an array of survival simulations, including sleep deprivation, lack of food and water, as well as extreme cold water training, group and solo survival simulation challenges.
On successful completion of the above-mentioned challenges, Cole was one of four candidates who proceeded through to the survival instructors course, where he gained further knowledge in the essential skills needed to prepare and host survival courses.
These focused on teaching the survival and bushcraft skills and techniques he learnt while on the extreme challenges, as well as on how to organise and lead group expeditions.
Then, on June 21, Cole, together with the other three candidates, were awarded their membership as registered survival instructors with the Survival Training Association of South Africa (STASA).
With this Cole became the first survival instructor from KwaZulu-Natal to be registered.
Looking back on the whole experience, Cole can only attribute his successful completion and steadfast endurance, to the overwhelming support from his family, the incredibly camaraderie of his fellow teammates, as well as the unbelievable leadership guidance of his chief instructor, Herman Roos.
