One dead in Masinenge fire
More than 200 people have had to be housed at the creche in the settlement.
One person died in a fire which broke out at Masinenge informal settlement this morning at around 05:00 with 111 shacks gutted.
Simon April, spokesman for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, confirmed that one life was lost in the fire.
He said the RNM disaster team was still on the scene (at the time of writing) and that the cause of fire was unknown so far.
“Saps is investigating. A total of 208 people have been affected and are currently being housed in the creche, which is in the area,” he said.
“The RNM disaster team will conduct an urgent assessment and distribute relief items in stock.”
April said RNM leadership, led by the Speaker, Zodwa Mzindle, together with the Speaker of KZN Legislature, Nontembeko Boyce were on the scene to assist in terms of assessment and to mobilise relief for the victims.
“The Department of Human Settlements, Social Development, and SASSA are also on the scene to assist.”
Ugu mayor, Sikhumbuzo ‘Zero’ Mqadi, with acting municipal manager Vela Mazibuko, will also be visiting the Masinenge community today to assess the extent of damages.
