Sheppie’s ‘unsung hero’ makes a difference
The book pays tribute to their selflessness in serving communities throughout KwaZulu-Natal.
Kubashnee Perumal, an educator at St Martin de Porres School in Port Shepstone for the past 21 years, has been lauded for her achievements and dedication to community upliftment, particularly within the deaf community.
She has been acknowledged in an article in ‘The Unsung Heroes of KwaZulu-Natal’, a book which pays tribute to over 40 people who have made an invaluable contribution to society.
Kubashnee’s voluntary service to the deaf community and humanity at large has not gone unnoticed with her inclusion by Dr Kogie Archary in this community upliftment project.
Compiled and edited by Dr Archary, Fawzia Peer, Vishnu Naidoo and Advocate Lavan Gopaul, The Unsung Heroes, was launched at a special awards ceremony at Orient Hall in Durban last month.
The book pays tribute to their selflessness in serving communities throughout the province.
Kubashnee continues to live by the motto ‘deaf but certainly not dumb’ and ‘nothing about us, without us’.
She sees life as an adventure to be lived and shared meaningfully with others, to make a difference in other people’s lives. Despite being deaf as a toddler, she is an unsung hero, definitely having made a difference in so many children’s lives.
Kubashnee lost her dad on June 21, 2023 while in the process of writing her story.
Dr Kogie Archary is now working on another book for Volume 6: Tell Your Mother’s story.
