Youth benefit from driver’s licence programme
More than 25 youths were part of the all-expenses-paid programme and all got the experience to be in a car and drive on the road.
It was a dream come true for Nobuhle Lushaba to get a job immediately after completing the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) driver’s licence programme.
The programme was introduced at the beginning of the year after a call was made to unemployed youth to apply for a free opportunity, to obtain their driver’s licences.
More than 25 youths were part of the all-expenses-paid programme and all got the experience to be in a car and drive on the road.
RNM spokesperson Simon April said such a programme aims to equip young people, especially graduates and artisans to be employable.
“The programme is implemented every financial year, and in 2022/2023, we received more than 3000 applications, however due to a limited budget only 27 could be selected. During the selection process, an attempt was made to ensure fair distribution within the clusters of RNM, “said April.
Lushaba said when she applied for the programme she did not even have a learner’s licence and when the opportunity presented itself she grabbed it with both hands.
” I am a graduate and have been looking for a job. I started the RNM driver’s licence programme in May and in June was able to get my driver’s licence. I was so fortunate that at the time my former university, the University of KwaZulu-Natal had a vacancy for a Resident Life Officer ( RLO) and one of the requirements was a licence. I got the job, “said Lushaba.
She said she was grateful to RNM and Mfanamuhle Driving School for the opportunity.
“The driving instructor was very patient with us, especially me who had to start from the very beginning. Thank you so much.”
April said that the advertisement for this financial year will go out before the end of the current calendar year, and youth are encouraged to apply.
