JUST IN: Bus carrying 42 school children crashes through sugar mill gates

It was a terrifying experience for the children.

Five children were seriously injured when a bus carrying school children crashed through the old Umzimkhulu Sugar Mill refinery gates in Port Shepstone earlier this afternoon. The bus carrying 42 children then proceeded to plunge down an embankment.

The bus hit a pillar before plunging down an embankment.

Glen Preston of Med-Evac said five children were seriously injured and had been transported to hospital by various emergency services.

He said the driver was coming down the hill when he lost control and entered the mill through the gate.

“It veered right, hit a pillar and then veered further right, through a barrier fence and down the bank.”

Preston said it was a private bus transporting the children.
