The driver who allegedly struck and killed Mahomed Swalleh Ameer, a well-known South Coast runner, appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday this week.
Ameer was killed in 2021 while running along Marine Drive in Port Shepstone, training for the Comrades Marathon.
Now that the matter is in court, Ameer’s widow Neri hopes to get closure at the conclusion of the case.
“Finally, there has been a breakthrough. The investigating officer informed me that the driver of the vehicle that struck my husband has been summoned to appear in court on a charge of culpable homicide. I know the case can take another two years, but I am glad that the matter is now in court. The court’s decision will give me closure,” said Neri.
She said she could not attend Tuesday’s proceedings as she could not face the accused, however a family member attended.
The woman driver was informed by the court that investigations on the incident had been concluded and that the trial has been set down for September 28.
