Justice Park is finally complete
Initially, this project was meant to be completed in 2016.
The multi-million rand Justice Park project has finally been completed and is expected to be fully operational soon.
The spokesperson for the Department of Public Works, Lennox Mabaso said an official opening will occur once the department is certain that there are no faults with the system or the building itself.
“A few months ago the ministers visited the new courts to see if everything was in order and they were happy,” he added.
In 2014, a contractor was awarded a R285-million tender to construct the complex to include 16 courts, 19 offices, parking for 255 vehicles and various holding cells with maximum security.
This project was to be completed in 2016.
In 2018 construction stopped due to financial challenges and was meant to be completed by May the same year.
By 2019 construction was still underway and had to be put on hold for the same reason.
In 2020 the project became an expensive ‘white elephant’ with fears that it will fall prey to vandals or simply be left to crumble away.
While waiting for this project to be completed, the current courts became a mess inside and outside.
Earlier this year, the Herald reported on the state of the courts where rubbish was not being collected and old furniture was dumped.
