All 21 bathing beaches along the South Coast are open for swimming.
As news broke of Durban beaches being closed due to high E.Coli levels, the coast prepared for an influx of visitors.

Phelisa Mangcu, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise, said as a top seaside destination, the summer holidays are always a busy and festive time of year on the KZN South Coast – and this year is no different.

“We’ve had reports of bookings sitting at 75% to 85%, and with Ugu District enjoying top occupancy rates in the final week of 2022, we’re anticipating these numbers to increase,” she said.

“Our warm, golden beaches are a definite drawcard for visitors, all of which are open and ready to welcome visitors. The KZN South Coast also boasts the highest number of Blue Flag beaches in the province, which is a testament to the quality and safety of our beaches. In addition, the coast is home to the highest number of tidal pools in the province, offering sheltered bathing conditions and a perfect place for families to set up for a day at the sea.”

Zimbini Mpurwana, acting spokesperson of Ugu District Municipality, confirmed beaches from Scottburgh to Port Edward are open and safe for bathing, however they recommend that people avoid swimming in lagoons.
“Water quality tests continue being carried out as per norm by our environmental services,” she said.
So, is the coast ready for its visitors?

Simon April of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) added that during the season, all 21 bathing beaches are manned by lifeguards from Monday to Sunday, from 07:00 to 17:00.

April confirmed that the municipality working with various stakeholders such as the Saps, other law enforcement agencies, and other spheres of government are more than ready for visitors.

Acting mayor Sibusiso Shange, said that on behalf of RNM, he extends warm wishes for a safe and joyous festive season to visitors and residents.

“To all road users, let’s all be cautious, patient and considerate on the roads. To those who will be enjoying themselves, I say, ‘don’t drink and drive, don’t drink and walk'”.

He further urged beachgoers to use designated swimming beaches, and follow instructions and guidance of lifeguards who will be deployed at all swimming beaches.

“During this time also remember those who cannot afford and extend a hand to them. Blessed is the hand that’s giving than the one that’s taking! May this time be filled with moments of happiness, unity and peace. Wishing everyone a wonderful festive season and a prosperous 2024,” said Shange.
