Moms and babies showered with love
Scottburgh's GJ Crookes Hospital had a delivery of a male New Year’s baby weighing 2.95kg.
To kick off the new year, Umdoni Municipality in partnership with the Office of the Premier and the National and Provincial Departments of Health visited GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh this week, for an act of kindness.
The team helped welcome the babies born during the festive period and on January 1, and showered the children and mothers who were in hospital during this time with love and support.
The hospital had a delivery of a New Year’s baby boy weighing in at 2.95kg at 02:25.
The newborn and other children admitted at the hospital received gifts which included toys, educational material and essentials.
The National Minister for Health Dr Joe Paahla, KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube and MEC for Health Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu addressed the media and all present.
They collectively welcomed the birth of new babies in the country and at the same time raised concern on the increasing statistics of teenage pregnancies.
A plea has been made by Premier Dube-Ncube for the nation to vigorously deal with this ‘pandemic’ by implementing strategies to fight teenage pregnancies.
In support of the call by the Premier, MEC Simelane-Zulu said there should be joint programmes by municipalities and the department to talk about the alleviation of unplanned pregnancies.
“Parents need to be open with children regarding sexual reproductive health or else seek assistance from health facilities to have these talks with their children – both boys and girls,” said MEC Simelane-Zulu.
Umdoni’s acting mayor Cllr Mthandeni Mbutho expressed his gratitude for this initiative on behalf of the Umdoni leadership.
“One is pleased that we had an opportunity to collaborate with the department and the Office of the Premier in this initiative to give back to the people of Umdoni,” he said.
“Government will forever incept initiatives that aim to better the lives of people and show them love and care even by little gestures.”
