Recording deal for Afro hip-hop artist
He comes from a musical family as his grandfather was a Schathamiya group leader and mother, a poet.
Young and aspiring Afro hip-hop artist Khethukuthula Yalo (28), popularly known as Olefied Khetha, has earned himself a recording deal with Touch Africa Records, joining artists such as Naima Kay, also from the South Coast, who has made a name for herself under the label.
Yalo received the news after he performed at St Mike’s recently, and record label boss Mdu Ngcobo announced he would sign him up to take his career to greater heights.
“When God says your time is now, no one can argue with that, I am honoured to get recognition from Mr Ngcobo. I’m excited and cannot wait to show the world what I’ve to offer. I believe a lot of people will resonate with what I’m bringing to the table, and I also believe that the label will be proud to have signed me because I’m exactly what they are looking for” said Yalo.
He said his love for music started at a young age as he comes from a musical family.
“My grandfather was a Schathamiya group leader and my mother, a poet.
As an artist it has been easy for me to be as creative. I recorded my first song in 2009 and I received positive feedback from my mother who encouraged me to make more music as she believed in me. Sadly, she later passed away,” he added
Yalo said when he started making music his focus was on hard-core rap, but he started falling in love with Afro-pop.
“I wanted to change genres but I did not want to confuse or lose my fans. I then decided to comprise both genres into Afro hip-hop fusion. The genre is a mix of Afro-pop, Afro-beats and some hip-hop elements, “he explained.
He said he is looking forward to working with the record company and other artists.
“I had many ideas for my career, I now believe with a record label by my side, things will work out better. So far, I had been working independently,” Yalo expressed.
He said the South Coast has a lot of talent and he believes that more will be discovered by big record labels. He wished all South Coast artists the best in growing their careers.
