No bridge too far for brothers
The brothers, who volunteer for the Umtentweni Community Police Forum (CPF), said their Sunday morning mission began when they received a phone call for a 'possible vehicle in the river.'
A muddy bridge covered with debris didn’t stop brothers, Andrew de Witt (30) and Lennard Alberts (23) from going the extra mile last Sunday morning.
Heavy rain had caused the Mzimkhulu River to swell and flood the low level bridge at Batstone’s Drift near Port Shepstone.
As a result, the bridge was closed to motorists.

The brothers, who volunteer for the Umtentweni Community Police Forum (CPF), said their Sunday morning mission began when they received a phone call for a ‘possible vehicle in the river.’
“We rushed to the scene, and it was a surfboard in the water. We then met up with Tweni CPF chairman, Beyers Le Roux. The Department of Transport was contacted and they said they could only clean the bridge on Monday this week. We then asked for permission from Law Enforcement and heads of the CPF if we could go ahead and clean it.”
The brothers, along with Thokozani Gumede from Law Enforcement got stuck in (deep in mud) from 08:00 to 11:32, and worked hard to clean and restore the bridge for motorists.
Andrew said they also assisted Law Enforcement to block off the road on the Bastones Drift side, to ensure the safety of community that no vehicles could cross the bridge.
