Eyesore dumping spot restored

Ramsgate Conservancy took the lead in restoring the bank, initiating a comprehensive clean-up and facelift of the immediate area.

To protect and improve Ramsgate’s unique eco-environment, members of the community and ratepayers joined Ramsgate Conservancy and Tidy Towns with their wheelbarrows, spades and gloves at the Whale Deck recently, to restore an embankment to its natural form.

At the site in Ramsgate are (from left) Ross Douthwaite (Ramsgate Conservancy), Scott Kvalsvig (Tidy Towns Shelly to Margate and Ramsgate Conservancy) and Sarah Unsworth (Ramsgate Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association).

Previously, phonebooths had been located on the site. However, it had turned into a dumping spot and the public was frequently observed disposing household waste.

Volunteering and helping with the clean-up are (from left) Gabriella Douthwaite, Marlene Franken, Louis Venter and Charlie Miller.

Ross Douthwaite, chairperson of the Ramsgate Conservancy said despite signage, advertising efforts and regular public campaigns aimed at discouraging dumping, the problem persisted, prompting the need for drastic action.

Tidy Towns volunteers restored the embankment to its natural form.

“This endeavour would not have been possible without the valuable assistance of Tidy Towns Ramsgate and Tidy Towns Shelly to Margate, and the residents who actively participated, along with contributions from local businesses that helped cover the costs,” said Douthwaite.

BEFORE: The spot was a dumping spot.

The Ramsgate Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association successfully raised funds to construct a wall which will be painted ‘Ramsgate blue’ with the vision of transforming it into an aesthetic sign, promoting the area once funds become available.

AFTER: A newly built wall will be painted in ‘Ramsgate blue’.
