Talk to focus on admiralty reserve

Dr Yvette Ehlers Smith, the district ecologist for Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, will be presenting a fascinating talk on the admiralty reserve this Sunday, February 18.
Join the Bendigo Conservation Group (BCG) at Leka’s @ B Cubed in Southport at 14:00 for an educational and inspiring insight into the wonderful green belt that protects and beautifies the area.
The chairperson of BCG, Joan Gallagher, said many people who are new to the area may not know this term (admiralty reserve) that refers to the strip of land between 45m to 60m wide, inland of the high-water mark.
Its main functions are to allow the lateral and vertical flow of game and wildlife, protect and stabilise the dunes, preventing erosion and acting as a buffer during storm surges (which are likely to increase substantially).
“Property owners, especially beachfront, concerned citizens, conservationists and garden service owners who deal with these properties are strongly urged to attend this informative event, to find out the ‘do’s and don’ts regarding what is permissible, and thereby ensuring they don’t fall foul of legal limits as there can be repercussions,” said Gallagher.
The area is referred to as ‘coastal public property’ and it is protected by the National Environmental Management Act, the Integrated Coastal Management Act, the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act, the KwaZulu-Natal Conservation Management Act and the Natal Nature Conservation Ordinance.
“Therefore, lots of protection to keep us and our fellow creatures safe,” said Joan.
