Rescued tortoise recovering well
The tortoise had one immobile leg and an injury on another.
An injured leopard tortoise was found by a golfer several months ago at Umkomaas Golf Club in a rather poor state.
The tortoise had one immobile leg and an injury on another. He was sent to uShaka Sea World for treatment as he had a bad leg break which required amputation, and treatment on the injured leg.
After healing, he was moved to Crocworld Conservation Centre, where he is currently thriving and befriending others leopard tortoises – which are the fourth largest species of tortoises in the world.
“He’s even made friends with another tortoise that also has three legs,” said James Wittstock, centre manager.
The tortoise, who is yet to be named, is estimated to be around 15 to 20 years old.
The conservation centre requests assistance from the public in naming their new tripod resident. The naming competition is currently active on their Facebook page. Simply suggest a name in the comments and stand a chance to win tickets for a family of four.
Did you know: The leopard tortoise is one of the Little Five joined by the elephant shrew, red-billed buffalo weaver, antlion and rhino beetle.
