PROTEST ACTION: Road closed on R61 between Mzamba and Bizana

The community is protesting over road and water issues.

The community of Ward 24 in the Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality has closed the R61 main road between Mzamba and Bizana from early this morning.

Traffic is being diverted to alternative routes.

A community member, who did not want to be named, said they are protesting over road and water issues.

“We are tired of begging for service delivery, especially when it comes to water and roads. They (government) forget about us but when it is time for elections they ask us to vote for them.”

This community member said they want to be heard and, therefore, decided to take part in a protest this morning, from 03:00.

The member said they have also had challenges in terms of water safety, with a number of drownings in local rivers.

“We’ve been asking for a bridge over certain rivers because we’ve had so many drownings, but we are still being ignored.”
