Power outage results in water supply shortages in mid-South Coast
Ugu will be closely monitoring the system to ensure full restoration of services.
Ugu District Municipality announced today (June 5) that the South Coast pipeline system and Umzinto water treatment works are currently experiencing water supply shortages due to Sunday’s power outage.
The following infrastructure is affected: Toti water treatment works, Mnini water pump station and Quarry reservoir designed to receive water from the Mnini water pump station for bulk distribution.
As per Ugu, it was said that outlets were closed last night to build up storage. As of this morning, reservoir levels are below 20% with improvement expected throughout the day.
Areas affected include Scottburgh central and south, Park Rynie, Freeland Park, Mahlongwa, Amandawe, Pennington, Kelso, Umzinto WTW and GJ Crookes Hospital.
With regards to the Umzinto WTW, the plant’s production has also been affected by power outages impacting the Esperanza water pump station, EJ Smith pump station and Umzinto plant yesterday.
Ugu explained that although power was restored last night (June 4), the command reservoirs were critically low, and booster pumps lacked suction pressure due to the disrupted plant processes.
Plant operations have now resumed, and the booster pumps feeding from the plant will be activated this morning, depending on sufficient plant storage levels.
In terms of the recovery plan, the Umzinto system is estimated to be recovered by tomorrow afternoon, assuming no further operational issues arise. Ugu will be closely monitoring the system to ensure full restoration of services.
Areas affected for this include Umzinto CBD and surrounding areas, Hazelwood, Ghandinagar, Farm Isonti, KwaCele, Cedars, Dududu, Malangeni, Esperanza and Shayamoya.
