New deputy mayor for Umzumbe
Ndlovu said that the IFP believes in giving people what they need which is service delivery.
Mlungisi Ndlovu, who was unlawfully elected as ‘mayor’ of Umzumbe Municipality in February this year, has now been elected as deputy mayor.
The IFP councillor was elected uncontested at a council meeting on Tuesday morning last week.
Speaking to the Herald, Ndlovu said his appointment is now confirmation that Umzumbe Municipality is no longer run by the ANC, but it’s now working together with the IFP.
Ndlovu said that the IFP believes in giving people what they need, which is service delivery.
“No matter what position we are given, our mandate is to provide people with basic needs because they voted for us, it means they trust us.”
Ndlovu is now also the chairperson of the infrastructure committee, which he said he will use to his advantage to make sure people receive service delivery.
In February this year, after some councillors were led by the former speaker Sbonelo Maphumulo resulted in Ndlovu being elected as ‘mayor’.
During the election of the ‘mayor’, the IEC was not present, neither was a magistrate nor was Ndlovu sworn in. Also, it was believed, at the time, that Maphumulo had been suspended by the ANC.
The ANC later released a statement that it was vindicated by an interim court order, which declared Ndlovu a ‘fake mayor’, to stop him from masquerading as mayor of Umzumbe.
Umzumbe chief whip Sibongiseni Cele said the municipality has not had a deputy mayor for some time because the previous one, Mlungisi Luthuli, had been on suspension.
Cele emphasised that it is the norm that a deputy mayor heads the infrastructure committee, with the hope that they will be able to help people with service delivery.
“There have been a lot of issues with providing services to the community because the deputy mayor’s office had no political head.”
Cele said they are seeing progress, and they are working well together and also hopes it will help the municipality going forward, as it was placed under administration by Cogta in May.
