Non-profit strives towards a drug-free society
A special drug-free programme for caregivers and addicts will be held at the Marburg Mosque every Tuesday evening.
While there is no guarantee that someone will never abuse drugs and alcohol, there are steps that everyone can take to help prevent substance abuse.
Members from the Refocus and Upliftment Foundation (RAUF), a non-profit organisation, are striving towards a drug-free society. According to RAUF, 15% of South Africa’s population is active drug addicts – a staggering nine million people.
Nazir Shaik, co-ordinator of RAUF, said it’s not just about the numbers; it’s about the ripple effect that drugs have on society.
“These effects are profound and far-reaching. Families are torn apart, communities fractured by addictions and futures derailed by the relentless pursuit of a high. But it doesn’t stop there. The impact of crime reverberates through the streets, with drug-related offences fueling a cycle of violence and despair. This creates a landscape of violent crime, paving the way to grievous bodily harm, rape and murder becoming the order of the day, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake,” he added.
According to Nazir, a special programme has been planned for caregivers and addicts to be held at the Marburg Mosque on Protea Road in Marburg every Tuesday at 18:00.
“If you have a problem with drug abuse or know of someone who needs help, attend RAUF’s first meeting. Remember, you don’t have to be an addict to attend the programme,” said Nazir.
