Raise funds for children with cancer

There are many ways to get involved in this fundraiser.

The South Coast community is reminded of the upcoming Cupcakes 4 Kids With Cancer drive, which will be held at Galleria Mall in Amanzimtoti on September 28.

This fundraiser will help KZN locals not only celebrate National Cupcake Day with Cupcakes of Hope but also raise awareness of childhood cancer and raise funds for children with cancer who are in need of medical and financial assistance.

Shyanne Kanayee, co-ordinator of the drive at the mall since 2018, explained that Cupcakes of Hope is a non-profit company and public benefit organisation that has helped make a difference in local communities for years.

Kanayee has also been part of pre-sales leading up to the big day. Some of these pre-sales events were held in Scottburgh, Umzinto and Umkomaas previously.

For the cupcake drive, volunteers are requested to ‘bake’ a difference in the lives of cancer warriors. These volunteers then become Cupcake Angels, and the only requirement is to make their cupcakes with a whole lot of love.

The organisation, on average, assists 200 cancer warriors each month by paying for some of their medical treatments and day-to-day expenses such as food, clothing and transport for hospital visits.

All of the warriors go through a registration process, which includes the submission of doctors’ letters specifying their cancer diagnosis.

As an ever-increasing number of new patients register each month, they are looking for new ways to raise funds.

The team raises money by approaching companies and sponsors with requests to donate money, and they hold several awareness and fundraising campaigns throughout the year.

If you would like to be part of the cupcake drive, you can do so by:

* Donating cupcakes: Whether you are a home baker or have a bakery on board – everything will be accepted to help raise funds.

* Supplying materials: The team needs gloves, boxes, tissues and packaging.

* Sponsoring a prize: A voucher for any service you offer, or small gifts to give away that can contribute to the event’s success.

* Volunteering: Simply help sell cupcakes on the day or assist in any way possible.

“Everyone is capable of ‘baking’ a difference at this year’s drive,” said Kanayee.
