Motorist damages Tweni Whale Deck and drives off

The Tweni Whale Deck was established by volunteers of the Umtentweni Conservancy in November 2007.

A motorist recently drove into and broke the benches at the Tweni Whale Deck.

Alex Skene of the Umtentweni Conservancy planned to fix the benches last week. There are also plans to install a camera and reconnect an old camera.

The popular meet and greet/look-out spot attracts plenty of locals in Umtentweni, and it’s not uncommon to see folk sitting and socialising at the ‘Whale Deck’ – often around a fire.

Established by volunteers of the Umtentweni Conservancy in November 2007, the aim was to protect and promote the natural heritage in the greater Umtentweni area.

Over the years, the conservancy has added new benches, a toilet, and a water tank and worked hard to maintain the deck and its garden.

In 2017, vandals set the Tweni Whale Deck alight and then came back to do more damage two days later, and once again, the dedicated conservancy team was there to repair it.
