The theme for Stonecroft’s recent October meeting, on yet another wet Friday, was ‘The Elderly’. It was beautifully summed up by speaker Kevin Sprong, who said: ‘our age does not have to define our world’, a sentiment with which all in attendance agreed. Laura Vogt started the morning on a lovely note, entertaining with her beautiful voice, accompanying herself on guitar.
Shirley Sterling, general manager of Mbango Valley Association, gave an excellent presentation on ‘Retirement home or not?’, mentioning the important decisions that one needed to make and then listing some of the advantages. She gave advice on how to choose one’s retirement home, giving many pointers on what to look for and consider. Shirley concluded by explaining the important difference between life rights and sectional titles. Her talk was immensely helpful and valuable. She then took questions from the floor and was able to bring clarity to the questioners.
Tea was, as usual, superbly presented by the Methodist Ladies WA – at each meeting, it never differs from the high standard, and those attending appreciate it. It is during tea that the noise level rises as the guests chat, laugh and interact.
Kevin Sprong travelled from Scottburgh to address the audience on the matter of ageing well. There was much laughter at Kevin’s sparkling address, but within the humour were many truths and advice to enjoy in this new phase of life. Learn new things, take up hobbies, dance, and keep moving. Don’t worry about your short-term memory; your long term is getting better. “We have precious memories and should write our stories for our families. The younger generations are living under incredible pressure; divorce is spiralling and, as the older generation. We can help. We do have worth, and the future needs us,” he said.
