Sanral to assess Mzimkhulu bridge
Public concerns were raised over the structural integrity of the bridge after cracks had appeared and large chunks of concrete had broken off.
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has now taken over the structural assessment of the Mzimkhulu River bridge.
This was confirmed by Ndabezinhle Sibiya, the spokesperson of the KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma.
Further comment was sought from Sanral; however, none was received before going to press.
During its inspections about two weeks ago, the Department of Transport reduced the speed limit to 30km/h on both sides of the bridge.
Public concerns were raised over the structural integrity of the bridge after cracks had appeared and large chunks of concrete had broken off.
Further north, the southbound lane of the Ezimbokodeweni River bridge on the N2 near Amanzimtoti partially collapsed recently.
Sanral’s preliminary findings suggest the damage resulted from the failure of span four of the bridge, which was caused by the malfunctioning of its bearings.
It aims to have traffic flow again before the start of the festive season next month.
